🐃 Migrating Herds Crossing the TZ/KE Border: The Great Migration

Every year, millions of animals take part in one of nature’s greatest spectacles—the Great Migration across the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem. Huge herds of wildebeest, accompanied by zebras and other grazing animals, move between Tanzania and Kenya in search of fresh grass and water. One of the most spectacular moments comes when the herds reach the northern Serengeti and the Mara River, where animals cross between Tanzania and Kenya. The exact timing changes with rainfall and grazing conditions, so the migration never follows a perfectly predictable schedule. 🌍 A Journey Across Two Countries
The migration is not really two separate migrations. It is one enormous circular movement through the connected Serengeti–Mara ecosystem. The herds spend much of the year in Tanzania before moving north toward Kenya. During the dry-season period, large groups can move across the border and into the Maasai Mara, following fresh grazing. 🐃 Millions on the Move
Wildebeest form the backbone of the migration, traveling alongside large numbers of zebras and gazelles. From the ground, the sight can seem almost endless. Thousands of animals may stretch across the landscape, creating enormous moving columns of dust and wildlife. Every animal is following the same basic goal: find food, water, and a place to survive. 🌊 The Dangerous River Crossing When the herds reach the Mara River, they face one of the greatest challenges of the journey. Animals gather along the riverbank, sometimes waiting for hours before one individual finally takes the first step. Suddenly, the herd can surge forward. The crossing is chaotic. Wildebeest push against one another as they scramble down steep banks and fight the current. Crocodiles may wait in the water, while exhaustion and strong currents create additional dangers. 🦁 Predators Follow the Herds
Where enormous herds gather, predators are never far away. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas and crocodiles all take advantage of the abundance of prey. For predators, the migration creates opportunities—but for the migrating animals, every day is another battle for survival.
