What Is the Difference Between Venom and Poison?

Have you ever wondered why a snake is called venomous, while a poison dart frog is called poisonous? The two words sound similar, but they describe two different ways toxins affect another animal. 🐍 What Is Venom?
Venom is a toxic substance that an animal actively delivers into another animal's body. It usually enters through a bite, sting, spine, or another specialized structure. Examples include: 🐍 Snakes that inject venom through fangs 🕷️ Spiders that bite with venom 🦂 Scorpions that inject venom with their stingers 🐝 Bees and wasps that deliver venom through stings 🐌 Cone snails that use specialized structures to inject venom Venom can contain many different toxins that affect the nervous system, blood, muscles, or other tissues. 🐸 What Is Poison?
Poison generally harms an animal when it is eaten, touched, or absorbed rather than deliberately injected. A famous example is the poison dart frog. Some poison frogs obtain their toxins from their diet, including certain ants and mites. Their toxic skin can discourage predators from eating them. Other examples include: 🐸 Poison dart frogs 🐡 Pufferfish 🐦 Hooded pitohui 🐸 Some poisonous amphibians 🧪 What About Animals That Are Both?
Nature does not always follow simple categories. Some animals can be both venomous and poisonous. For example, certain snakes can have venomous bites while also accumulating toxins from the poisonous animals they eat. Spitting cobras can also deliver venom through their bites and spray venom toward attackers. There is also a third category sometimes discussed by scientists: toxungenous animals, which actively release toxins without injecting them with a bite or sting. Some animals can spray or otherwise project irritating chemicals toward threats. 🌎 Why Did These Toxins Evolve? Venom and poison are powerful tools in the struggle for survival. Venom can help predators quickly immobilize prey or help animals defend themselves. Poison is often used as a defense, making a potential predator sick or discouraging it from attacking again. Scientists have also discovered that venom contains molecules with potential medical uses. Some venom-derived compounds have already contributed to medicines, showing that substances capable of harming animals can also provide valuable tools for medicine. 🧠 The Simple Answer The biggest difference is how the toxin is delivered. Venom is delivered into you. Poison is usually taken in or encountered by you.
